Erika Martinez is a sewist, potter, and a teaching artist. As the maker and owner of Happy Unicorn Studio, Erika creates products that are functional, lightweight and eye catching. The focus of her textile work is handcrafted face masks, handbags, purses, totes and accessories. She employs her unique eye for color and pattern to create fun and functional pieces.
Erika is also a potter. She began her journey with this medium with a beginners class at the Durham Arts Council. She immediately fell in love with the clay and process and has been creating her work at the Durham Arts Council Clay Studio for over 10 years. For her pottery, she creates wheel thrown pots and she decorates her pieces with hand painted designs.
Being passionate about her work and her belief in the importance of art being part of a child’s learning process, she became a teaching artist over 5 years ago. She enjoys teaching sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery and other handwork mediums to elementary and middle school aged children.
Erika enjoys being part of the artisan community in the Triangle and her studio is based in Durham, NC.
