Lauren Butare Smith

I find myself drawn to divergent styles in painting.  I explore detail and realism with watercolor and graphite, but I also enjoy the freedom associated with abstract paintings.

I was originally trained as a veterinarian, but found myself unable to work in that field after a severe and protracted illness.   Although my struggles have been difficult, I am thankful to have had such a strong attraction to art in addition to science.  I have rededicated myself to my art, and am enjoying the freedom of expression associated with being a painter.

Because of my history, I enjoy painting animals above all. I paint animal portraits by commission and try to capture the true essence of every animal with my portraits.
