The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University opened in 2005 as a major center for the arts on Duke University’s campus, in Durham and the surrounding Research Triangle area. The 65,000-square-foot building was designed by architect Rafael Viñoly. The museum organizes and presents leading-edge exhibitions that travel to institutions worldwide, including Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush (2017), Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art (2016), Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist (2014), Wangechi Muti: A Fantastic Journey (2013), Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool (2008) and El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Age of Philip III (2008). Dynamic programs include free Family Days, performing arts events, lectures, film series and social gatherings. More than 1 million people have visited the museum since it opened in 2005.

Since opening in 2005, the Nasher Museum has been dedicated to building a groundbreaking collection of contemporary art. In this effort, the museum recognizes and supports global artists of extraordinary vision, whose works spark opportunities for deep and thoughtful engagement. The Nasher’s collecting strategy emphasizes works by diverse artists who have been historically underrepresented, or even excluded, by mainstream arts institutions, and maintains a particular focus on artists of African descent. This strategy also includes work by emerging artists, self-taught artists, and outstanding work by artists who live in North Carolina and the South who contribute to the surrounding creative community. Other strengths in the collection include European medieval art, European and American paintings, Outsider art, classical antiquities, African art and ancient American art.
