Carol Fountain Nix is an artist, instructor, entrepreneur and designer who specializes in mixed media and calligraphic works.

Carol’s career has encompassed many different areas of art and design. As a business owner of NIXdesign in downtown Raleigh for over 23 years, Carol worked with a diverse range of clients,including: The Body Shop, Burt’s Bees, IBM, Quintiles, Pfizer and Astroturf.TM She has received many national design awards and has been published in many design magazines and publications. She recently won a national Graphis GOLD® award for her design work for French Paper Company. Carol has taught graduate level courses in brand strategy, user experience design and professional practice in design as an Associate Professor of the Practice at The College of Design at NC State.

She has taught calligraphy internationally, including workshops at Adobe and Facebook headquarters. As a multimedia artist, Carol uses a unique combination of written texts and various materials for large-scale works and works on paper. Carol also owns FountainArts, a retail company targeted for the wine/gourmet market. Her signature line of product are sold in high-end retail markets all over the world. Carol holds several trademarks and patents on many of her designs and continues to design new product lines.

Carol is currently the Director of the NC State University Crafts Center and C:LAB digital fabrication makerspace, where she applies her knowledge of business, management and digital technology to traditional media and making. Carol is an Associate Professor at the NC State College of Design where she teaches courses in typography and design.
