Campo Research Studio (Campo) is a collaboration between Puerto Rican artists, Roxana Pérez-Méndez and Mario Marzán. Campo’s experimental long-distance walks and participatory pilgrimages utilize the path as a site of creative inquiry to approach social, environmental and political justice in meaningful ways. To conjure a sustainable and decolonial future, Campo navigates the complex poetics of the archipelago (Glissant), the submarine (Brathwaite) and the island (Benítez-Rojo) with their audience participants. By attuning their audiences to forces more powerful than themselves, their work seeks to cultivate compassionate action. Pérez-Mendez (MFA, Tyler School of Art) and Marzán (MFA, Carnegie Mellon) both serve as Associate Professors of Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the areas of Sculpture and Drawing, respectively. They will launch their second walking residency program, Drawn to the Camino, in May 2024.
